No direction from Party on Triple Talaq voting, but had understanding to go against it: PDP MP

Says, were told by opposition that bill would be sent to select committee’

Srinagar, July 31 (RNA): In an effort to clear the air on abstaining from voting on Triple Talaq bill, the PDP parliament member Mir Fayaz Ahmad Wednesday said that PDP Parliament members did not abstain deliberately but had been told that the bill would be sent to select committee. The MP however, admitted that there were no directions from the party leadership whether to go for or against the bill. Speaking to RNA from New Delhi over phone, Mr. Mir said that his party had issued a statement against the bill therefore, it was evident that they had to oppose the bill.

“We were under the impression that the bill would be sent to Select Committee along with five other bills because congress leaders had told us about that, so we decided to leave the house. We had no idea about bill being put to vote in the evening.” Mir Fayaz told RNA, adding that National Conference Vice- President Omar Abdullah was unnecessarily raking up the issue.

“If NC was sincere in their deeds, why didn’t Farooq Abdullah oppose the bill in Lok Sabha .” asserted PDP MP. He added that the Govt. tricked opposition by tabling the bill for vote all of a sudden and got it through.

“You listen to Azad Sahab’s interview, you will get an idea how everyone was taken off guard.” Said Mir Fayaz, adding that both the PDP Mps had made strong speeches against the bill and added that there was no question of not voting against it. He however, admitted that Party leadership had not spoken to them whether to go for the bill or against it.

“Yes, the Party leadership did not speak to us , but the party7 had already issued a statement against the bill so that was the line we were supposed to take. I had even made a vociferous speech against the bill which makes our stand clear.” MP told RNA.

Pertinently Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah entered into a twitter spat last evening on the issue with Omar Abdullah asking Mehbooba to check why her MPs chose to abstain from the voting. The PDP President however, hit back and reminded Omar Abdullah the 1999 trust vote of BJP in Parliament asking him, why his party sacked Saif ud Din Soz for not voting in favour of BJP. (RNA)
