Yatri drowns in lider at Pahalgam

Locals aghast for unprotected river banks near Parks


Srinagar, July 17 (RNA): An Amernath Yatri has drowned in river lider at Pahalgam this evening.RNA h Pahalgam reporter said that a Yatri Ashish Kumar R/O Alwar , Rajisthan who had gone into lider for taking a bath lost control and was swept away by fast water currents leading to his death. Though NDRF and SDRF along with Police, CRPF and other forces rushed to the area, two local boys identified as Umer Ganie and Sameer Bhat jumped into the stream in an attempt to save the drowning Yatri but failed in their endeavour. They however, were successful to retrieve the body near Levender Park. According to to RNA reporter, the dead body was later rushed to nearby hospital .The rescue operation was monitored by SSP Tanveer Jeelani who is on special Yatra duty at Pahalgam . SHO Pahalgam Shabir Ahmad and other forces were also involved in the operation.

Meanwhile locals were aghast with the Pehlgam Development Authority for not doing enough to protect the tourists . Talking to RNA, many visitors and locals said that the lider is flowing through a chain of parks in Pahalgam which are completely unprotected and unfenced. They alleged that the banks of the parks are without crate fencing having enormous potential of casualties . They also said that the Development Authority was busy in collecting the entry fee only but has misribly failed in errecting protection fences on the banks of the river so that people do not lose their lives.
